Comparison of efficacy of Natural honey and Triamcinolone acetonide (0.1%) in the healing of oral ulcers�??A clinical study

Background:To compare theeffectiveness of Natural Honey withTriamcinoloneaceton-ide(0.1%)on the healing of Oralulcers. Methods:Seventy four oralulcers(forty nine recurrent aphthousstomatitis,sixteen aphthous likeulcers in Oral submucous fibrosis and ninetraumaticulcers)wereevalu-atedandeach half of the mwereadvised to apply honey and triamcinoloneacetonide.Painscore(visualanalogscale),ulcersize(measured by William’s Periodontal Probe),erythemalevelwas evaluated on first day and after drugapplication.Statistical Analys is was done and tabulated by using SPSS software.Results:Natural honey showed significant reduction in pains core andulcersize(p<0.05)ascomparedtotriamcinoloneacetonide on third day.There was similar reductioninery themalevel(p<0.05)inbothgroups. Natural honey showed significant reduction inmoderating painin recurrent aphthousstomatitis and aphthous like ulcersinoralsub-mucous fibrosis where as in significant reduction in ulcersizeandery themalevel in all the three subgroups. Also,Triamcinolone acetonide showed in significant reduction in moderating pain,ulcersize anderythemalevelinallthesubgroupsoforalulcers.Conclusion:Thedataclearlydemonstratethatwiththeuseofhoney,noallergicreac-tionelicitedandnosignificantsideeffectswerereported.Inadditiontoitsvaluablenutritionalconstituents,honeyhasanti-inflammatory,antioxidantactivitiesthatmakeitasuitablenaturalsubjectforhealingoralulcers.Thus,itmighthelpclinicianstogivealternativetreatmentoforalulcersfortheirpatientssincehoneyisworldwideavailableandcheaperreadilyavailableacrosstheglobe.
